How to Transfer Pictures from HTC HD2 to Computer
connect your phone to your computer(via activesync), then find the folder called “DCIM” and then a folder called “100Media” inside of that. That is where your T-Mobile HTC HD2 stores the pictures you took. And then just drag them to your PC.
I usually just use Activesync for this, and select the file explorer option and copy and paste to the my documents folder (My Music my pictures etc) on the device, this should work fine.
Have you tried dragging and dropping the files using the mass storage method? When you plug your phone into your PC, choose mass storage mode, you’ll then be able to view all of the files on your phone via the Computer Icon on the desktop
We’ll need to grab an HD2 and try this for ourselves, but unfortunately I don’t have access to any phones at the moment. I shall pass this one over to our morning crew to have a look at for you
Finally managed to get my hands on the phone, and I can confirm that camera photos are stored under My Device > My Documents > My Pictures > 100MEDIA
I trust that helps

”I’m learning as I go, and I don’t like that”: Urban community college students’ college literacy. $49.99 This study explored the perceptions of students at an urban community college as they prepared for transfer to university. I interviewed four students, Latinas enrolled in teacher education programs, three times each for approximately one hour each. The first interviews were conducted while students were enrolled at Jane Addams College, a pseudonym for an ethnically diverse community college in a large Midwestern city. Follow-up interviews were conducted with the students over the course of one year, in 2006 and 2007. Interviews were conducted in two cases following the students from the community college through transfer to universities, in one case following the student as she continued to study at the community college, and in one case following the student through a period in which she had stopped out of college.;The title of this dissertation is a paraphrase of something a participant said: “There’s a lot that I need to learn…. I’m still, in a way, learning as I go—I don’t like that.” This frustration with learning the rules of the game while the game was in progress was common across the study participants, and their progress was complicated by their struggles to figure out the system as they were trying to navigate it. These students described in substantial depth a phenomenon I named “college literacy.” College literacy encompasses students’ knowledge of the system and their understanding of the consequences of their decisions, including knowing what they need to decide, knowing what the decision options are, and understanding when they need to make decisions to have the optimal experience in college. College literacy is a form of capital, part of the students’ cultural capital.;The students’ college literacy was insufficient when they began studying at community college, whether that happened right after high school, after they left a university, or after they had been away from formal education, and their understanding of college continued to unfold, |

The magnetic properties of different mono, bi and tri radicals have been studied. In addition, an interesting example of a photomagnetic system based on a supramolecular phenomenon in which a doublet species is converted into a singlet one is presented. Such ferrocene-polychlorotriphenylmethyl radicals present intramolecular electron transfer phenomenon which energy can be easily tuned by changing the substitutents of the donor or acceptor units or even the nature of the solvent. It is also described a novel valence tautomeric example combining an organic radical as acceptor unit and a ferrocene unit as the donor group. Finally, it has been proved that Ferrocene based polychlorotriphenylmethyl radicals systems also exhibits intense NLO responses that can be modulated at will simply tuning the donor and acceptor capabilities of the ferrocene and radical units. |

A Novel Taylor-Couette Bioreactor For Mammalian Cell Cultivation $105.11 In the pharmaceutical industry mammalian cell lines are the primary expression system in the production of therapeutic recombinant proteins. Despite its diverse drawbacks, the stirred tank reactor serves here as major workhorse for most applications. To overcome the limitations faced, improved bioreactors are needed to provide a more favorable in vitro environment to mimic in vivo conditions. In order to establish a suitable culture system, the cell’s responsiveness to environmental stress is evaluated to identify and anticipate the impact of this process parameter during cell cultivation. Based on these studies, a novel bioreactor featuring good mass transfer characteristics at low shear values both in maximal magnitude as well as distribution is constructed. Its unique cultivation microenvironment enhances cell growth and protein production and makes it superior to conventional stirred tank reactors. Especially nowadays in the environment of a fast growing and competitive market, governmental price control and rising quality requirements, the proposed bioreactor provides a suitable tool for biopharmaceutical research, development, and production. |

A System Of Instruction In Quantitative Chemical Analysis $36.84 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:To this brief intimation of the general purport and object of quantitative analysis, and the general mode of proceeding in analytical researches, I have to add that certain qualifications are essential to those who would devote themselves successfully to the pursuit of this branch. These qualifications are, 1, theoretical knowledge ; 2, skill in manipulation ; and 3, strict conscientiousness. The preliminary knowledge required consists in an acquaintance with qualitative analysis, the stoi’chiometric laws, and simple arithmetic. Thus prepared, we shall understand the method by which bodies are separated and determined, and we shall be in a position to perform our calculations, by which, on the one hand, the formulas of compounds are deduced from the analytical results, and, on the other hand, the correctness of the adopted methods is tested, and the results obtained are controlled. To this knowledge must be joined the ability of performing the necessary practical operations. This axiom generally holds good for all applied sciences, but if it is true of one more than another, quantitative analysis is that one. The most extensive and solid theoretical acquirements will not enable us, for instance, to determine the amount of common salt present in a solution, if we are without the requisite dexterity to transfer a fluid from one vessel to another without the smallest loss by spirting, running down the side, fec. The various operations of quantitative analysis demand great aptitude and manualskill, which can be acquired only by practice. But even the possession of the greatest practical skill in manipulation, joined to a thorough theoretical knowledge, will still prove insufficent to insure a successful pursuit of quantitative researches, unless also combined with a sincere |

A comprehensive mechanism for anthraquinone mass transfer in alkaline pulping. $49.99 A mechanism for the mass transfer of anthraquinone (AQ) into wood during alkaline pulping has been developed. Although the chemistry of action of AQ is well-developed, there has not been much work conducted on its diffusion properties. The discrepancies between different experiments with AQ indicate that something other than the chemistry is at work. Because most of the differences arise from differences in pulping conditions, it is likely that mass transfer is the source of these discrepancies.;A model system was therefore developed to explore the mass transfer properties of AQ. It was shown that AQ must be reduced to anthrahydroquinone (AHQ) at the membrane surface before any permeation of a membrane can occur. It was also shown that increasing surface coverage of the membrane through AQ particle size reduction could improve the rate of membrane permeation.;The mechanism described by the model system was then tested against pulping data. It was shown that the addition of surfactants could increase the pulping efficiency of AQ. This is probably through better dispersion of AQ particles to cover more chip surface area. Bulk reduction effects were also tested, and it was shown that bulk phase reducing agents decrease the efficacy of AQ in pulping. This led to the development of the mechanism for AQ diffusion in alkaline pulping. |

A design methodology for evolutionary air transportation networks. $49.99 The air transportation demand at large hubs in the U.S. is anticipated to double in the near future. Current runway construction plans at selected airports can relieve some capacity and delay problems, but many are doubtful that this solution is sufficient to accommodate the anticipated demand growth in the National Airspace System (NAS). With the worsening congestion problem, it is imperative to seek alternative solutions other than costly runway constructions. In this respect, many researchers and organizations have been building models and performing analyses of the NAS. However, the complexity and size of the problem results in an overwhelming task for transportation system modelers. This research seeks to compose an active design algorithm for an evolutionary airline network model so as to include network specific control properties. An airline network designer, referred to as a network architect, can use this tool to assess the possibilities of gaining more capacity by changing the network configuration.;Since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the airline service network has evolved into a distinct Hub-and-Spoke (H&S) network. Enplanement demand on the H&S network is the sum of Origin-Destination (O-D) demand and transfer demand. Even though the flight or enplanement demand is a function of O-D demand and passenger routings on the airline network, the distinction between enplanement and O-D demand is not often made. Instead, many demand forecast practices in current days are based on scale-ups from the enplanements, which include the demand to and from transferring network hubs. Based on this research, it was found that the current demand prediction practice can be improved by dissecting enplanements further into smaller pieces of information. As a result, enplanement demand is decomposed into intrinsic and variable parts. The proposed intrinsic demand model is based on the concept of ‘true’ O-D demand which includes the direction of each round trip |

A framework for evaluating the computational aspects of mobile phones. $49.99 With sales reaching {dollar}4.4 billion dollars in the first half of 2006 in the United States alone, and an estimated 80% of the world receiving coverage for their wireless phones in that year, interest in these devices as more than mere communicators has greatly increased. In the mid-to-late 1990s, digital cameras began to be incorporated into cellphones, followed shortly thereafter by Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware allowing location-based services to be offered to customers. Since then the use of mobile phone hardware for non-communication purposes has continued to expand. Some models, such as the Motorola V3M, have been specifically geared toward the storage and display of music and visual media, as well as receiving Internet broadcasts.;It is perhaps surprising, therefore, that relatively little has been done from an academic standpoint to provide a qualitative and comprehensive method of evaluating the performance of mobile phones regarding their ability to function as computing devices. While some manuals do offer comparisons of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that aid in the development of cellphone applications, little documentation exists to provide objective measurements of performance parameters.;This dissertation proposes a framework for evaluating the performance of mobile phones from a computational angle, focusing on three criteria: the processing power of the Central Processing Unit (CPU), data transfer capabilities, and the performance of the phone’s GPS functionality for the appropriation of geographic location data.;Power consumption has always been a major source of interest in the study of computer systems, and the limited hardware resources of mobile devices such as laptop computers, Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) and cellular telephones makes this a key concern. The power consumption factors associated with operation are therefore considered alongside the three core criteria being studied in this framework.;In addition |

Adaptive signal acquisition and power delivery for implanted medical devices. $49.99 Implantable medical devices are a vitally important area of technology. In-vivo monitoring and treatment of key biological parameters can greatly assist in managing health and preventing disease. Implanted devices typically perform some combination of bio-signal acquisition; signal processing; actuation; and telemetry, all of which consume power. Supplying adequate power and minimizing dissipation are critical constraints in all implanted devices. The driving application for this work is an implanted neural sensor. Motor neuroprosthetics seek to restore motor function to the paralyzed by sensing neural signals, decoding intended movement and relaying that movement to artificial limbs and actuators. In order to realize an implantable prosthetic processor, which acquires and compresses the neural signals, acute challenges lie in digitizing the neural signals within the power budget and delivering power to the implanted circuitry. Extremely low power consumption of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) can be attained through integrating signal analysis, system architecture, and thorough analog design. An ADC array which digitizes the neural signals sensed by a microelectrode array is described. The ADC array consists of 96 variable resolution ADC base cells. The base ADC has been implemented as a 100kS/s successive approximation ADC whose resolution can be varied from 3 to 8-bits with corresponding power consumption of 0.23micro W to 0.90microW, achieving an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 7.8 at the 8-bit setting. The resolution of each ADC cell in the array is adjusted according to the neural data content of the signal from the corresponding electrode. Resolution adaption reduces power consumption by a factor of 2.3 whilst maintaining an effective 7.8-bit resolution across all channels. The ADC cell occupies 0.07mm2 in 0.13microm CMOS. Advanced Topics in System and Signal Theory: A Mathematical Approach $129 This book provides an in-depth analysis of selected methods in signal and system theory with applications to problems in communications, shastic processes and optimal filter theory. The authors take a consistent functional analysis and operator theoretic approach to linear system theory, using Banach algebra and Hardy space techniques. The themes connecting all the chapters are questions concerning the consequences of the causality constraint, which is necessary in all realizable systems, and the question of robustness of linear systems with respect to errors in the data. The first part of the book contains basic background on the necessary mathematical tools and provides a basic foundation of signal and system theory. Emphasis is given to the close relation between properties of linear systems such as causality, time-invariance, and robustness on the one hand and the algebraic structures and analytic properties of the mathematical objects, such as Banach algebras or Hardy spaces, on the other hand. The requirement of causality in system theory is inevitably accompanied by the appearance of certain mathematical operations, namely the Riesz projection and the Hilbert transform. These operations are studied in detail in part two. Part three relates the mathematical techniques that are developed in the first two parts to the behaviour of linear systems that are of interest from an engineering perspective, such as expansions of transfer functions in orthonormal bases, the approximation from measured data and the numerical calculation of the Hilbert transform, as well as spectral factorization. |

Advanced coding and signal processing for holographic data storage systems. $69 Holographic data storage (HDS) technology promises larger capacity, higher data transfer rates, shorter access times and longer archival life in comparison with incumbent technologies. To operate at high densities which results in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high inter-symbol interference (ISI) conditions, the HDS systems need the assistance of signal processing and coding. This research focusses on coding and signal processing to achieve good performance. The first step towards our goal is to develop an accurate channel model that reflects the functioning of the HDS channel with its impairments. This allowed us to tune the impairments and study the application of the various techniques under different conditions. Moreover, we could tailor the input data pages to include interleaving, modulation codes, etc and the simulator would be tuned to mimic the real channel for testing their effects. Investigation on various equalization and detection techniques was carried out. Nonlinear methods for equalization are found to be not suitable for the low SNR real data pages. Advanced data detection/LLR calculation method is proposed and observed to work in tandem with equalization and error correction scheme using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to achieve good performance in terms of the decoded BER. The benefit of sparse modulation codes on a channel dominated by media saturation is demonstrated. Interleavers to combat burst error or magnification error dominated HDS channel are investigated. Signal processing for oversampled detector architecture is explored. Finally, feasibility of each of the techniques in terms of numerical computational complexity is analyzed for a real system. |

Affirmed: A Case Study $30.95 I should have heeded my husband’s apprehension and our friends’advice, but I wanted that house. Because Ron and I were public schoolteachers and supported public education, we ignored our friends’warnings and enrolled our daughters in Marion’s school system. A yearlater I transferred to the Marion system from Florence where I haddeveloped two educational programs: the itinerant learning disabilitiesprogram and a self-contained middle school class for emotionallydisturbed juvenile delinquents. In Marion, I was assigned to two schoolsas a learning disabilities clinician. Within weeks of my transfer, my firstencounter with the establishment made me acutely aware that thewarnings of our friends were accurate.Almost four decades since the landmark decision in Pickering v. Boardof Education, 1968, many teachers still cannot criticize their schoolsystem without fear of retaliation. When author Maggi Hall, a veteranpublic school teacher, wrote a letter to the newspaper in Marion County,South Carolina, criticizing her school district, she didn’t realize that oneday she would be called upon to defend the cornerstone of democracyitself-the First Amendment. AFFIRMED: Teachers as Citizens is her amazing story of determination. |

After Council Housing: Britain’s New Social Landlords $98.4 Few policies have had a more profound impact on the modern British housing system than the wholesale transfer of public housing to new social landlords. In the past two decades over a million homes have passed from council ownership to housing associations, and the management of another million has been outsourced by local authorities. After Council Housing provides a compelling account of its causes, methods and consequences. Rejecting the claim that the process of stock transfer is a simple case of damaging privatization, the authors argue instead that Britain’s new social landlords have contributed to a more business-like, consumer-focused and tenant-influenced social housing sector. |

Ambient Intelligence $192.98 Ambient intelligence is the vision of a technology that will become invisibly embedded in our natural surroundings, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple and effortless interactions, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users and context-sensitive, and autonomous. High-quality information access and personalized content must be available to everybody, anywhere, and at any time. This book addresses ambient intelligence used to support human contacts and accompany an individual’s path through the complicated modern world. From the technical standpoint, distributed electronic intelligence is addressed as hardware vanishing into the background. Devices used for ambient intelligence are small, low-power, low weight, and (very importantly) low-cost; they collaborate or interact with each other; and they are redundant and error-tolerant. This means that the failure of one device will not cause failure of the whole system. Since wired connections often do not exist, radio methods will play an important role for data transfer. This book addresses various aspects of ambient intelligence, from applications that are imminent since they use essentially existing technologies, to ambitious ideas whose realization is still far away, due to major unsolved technical challenges. |

Americanization And Anti-Americanism $90 The ongoing discussions about globalization, American hegemony and September 11 and its aftermath have moved the debate about the export of American culture and cultural anti-Americanism to center stage of world politics. At such a time, it is crucial to understand the process of culture transfer and its effects on local societies and their attitudes toward the United States. This volume presents Germany as a case study of the impact of American culture throughout a period characterized by a totalitarian system, two unusually destructive wars, massive ethnic cleansing, and economic disaster. Drawing on examples from history, culture studies, film, radio, and the arts, the authors explore the political and cultural parameters of Americanization and anti-Americanism, as reflected in the reception and rejection of American popular culture and, more generally, in European-American relations in the “American Century.” Alexander Stephan is Professor of German, Ohio Eminent Scholar, and Senior Fellow of the Mershon Center for the Study of International Security and Public Policy at Ohio State University, where he directs a project on American culture and anti-Americanism in Europe and the world. |

Amiga $49 The Amiga was a family of personal computers originally developed by Amiga Corporation. Development on the Amiga began in 1982 with Jay Miner as the principal hardware designer. Commodore International bought Amiga Corporation and introduced the machine to the market in 1985. The name Amiga was chosen by the developers specifically from the Spanish word for a female friend, and because it occurred before Apple and Atari alphabetically. Based on the Motorola 68k series of microprocessors, the machine sports a custom chipset with then advanced graphics and sound capabilities, and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system. While the M68k is a 32-bit processor, the version originally used in the Amiga, the 68000, has a 16-bit external data bus so it must transfer 32 bits of data in two consecutive steps, a technique called multiplexing – all this is transparent to the software, which was 32-bit from the beginning. The original machine was generally referred to in the press as a 16-bit computer; Later models featured fully 32-bit designs. The Amiga provided a significant upgrade from 8-bit computers such as the Commodore 64. |

An Engineering Approach to Computer Networking: ATM Networks, the Internet, and the Telephone Network $69.99 Fatbrain ReviewDesigned for computer science and electrical engineering majors, this advanced text introduces computer networks. The author takes an engineering approach to the study of networks; he focuses on conceptual understanding and network design tradeoffs — definitely not the usual protocol or algorithmic approach. This approach removes the need for simplification and inaccurate toy models. These simplified models often lack details on network behavior and alternative solutions. With a top down approach, the author overviews today`s global Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Internet and Telephony networks. He first discusses their histories and technical challenges. He then examines specific system design techniques and requirements such as protocol layering, multiple access, addressing and routing. Here, problems and possible solutions are included. His discussion of system design emphasizes the significance of error and flow control for growing and more complex networks. By the last section, students have the background to delve into the details of protocols, headers, stack performance, interfaces and implementations. The associated Web site contains additional information, support materials and exercises. |

An Investigation of Pv Powered Brushless DC Motors for Solar Pumping – An Autonomous and Elegant Integration of Electric Motor and Pump for Use with $76 Typical solar domestic hot water systems use a liquid working fluid to transfer heat from the solar collectors to the hot water storage tank. This book presents the results of a detailed investigation of a unique design and integration of electric motor and pump to circulate the liquid working fluid. The motor’s energy source is electricity that is generated from the sun by a photovoltaic module, creating an autonomous heating system. The design under review is a brushless DC motor that utilizes the magnet of a “mag-drive” pump as its rotor. This motor and pump technology, and integrated design results in both increased component utilization and increased reliability. The power switching devices of the motor perform commutation and maintain the photovoltaic module at the maximum power point. The pump magnet acts as the magnetic coupling and the motor rotor. Increased reliability is achieved through the use of solid state power electronics for commutation and the replacement of a dynamic pump seal with a static O-ring seal. This investigation reviews each major component’s characteristics under a variety of conditions to identify appropriate design choices and areas for improvement. |

An investigation into the prevalence of Alexandrium derived toxins in marine food webs. $49.99 The production of toxic compounds by phytoplankton and their subsequent transfer through marine food webs can have fatal consequences for both human consumers and marine predators. This dissertation examines the potential accumulation of toxins produced by dinoflagellates within the genus Alexandrium in marine food webs using both field collected samples and laboratory experiments. In particular, chapter one documents a dramatic change in the taxonomic structure of the phytoplankton community that occurred during the summer of 2004 in Monterey Bay, California—a change that resulted in a shift in the dominant toxin-producing species and the phycotoxins present in the food web. After the shift from a typically diatom-dominated system to a more red-tide, dinoflagellate-dominated system, Alexandrium catenella became more prevalent and the toxins produced by this species, paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), were detected in sentinel shellfish more frequently. Chapter two presents results from two laboratory feeding trials designed to investigate the uptake of PSTs and spirolides, two independent groups of toxins derived from A. catenella and A. ostenfeldii, in paddle crabs (Ovalipes catharus) using Greenshell mussels as a vector. Both PSTs and spirolides were detected in the hepatopancreas of paddle crabs, but not in the gills or the mussel tissue. These experiments demonstrated that paddle crabs can acquire these toxins rapidly, reaching dangerous PST concentrations after only 5 days of feeding on toxic mussels, and that uptake of PSTs and/or spirolides could occur in nature when toxic shellfish are present. Chapter three gives the results of a 3-year field study that examines 11 species of commercially harvested finfish and 2 species of rock crab in Monterey Bay for the presence of PSTs and compares the toxin levels in them to the density of A. catenella and concentration of PSTs in the water column. When A. catenella was present, PSTs were detected in 6 species |

An investigation of the pederin family: Total synthesis of theopederin D; synthesis and determination of the relative and absolute configuration of psymberic acid. $49.99 An investigation of the pederin family of natural products has led to the total synthesis of theopederin D, a synthesis of the C1-C6 portion of psymberin (psymberic acid), and the determination of the absolute configuration of C4 and C5 of this fragment.* Highlights of our theopederin D synthesis include the use of an asymmetric ketene-aldehyde cycloaddition to synthesize the A ring (or pederic acid subunit), a 1,5-anti-boron mediated aldol to construct the C16-C17 bond with high a high level of diastereocontrol, formation of the C and D rings in a one-pot, six reaction sequence, selective differentiation of a tetrahydrofuranol in the presence of a tetrahydropyranol, and elaboration of the C ring using vinylation chemistry developed by Yamamoto and Rainier.* The stereochemically labile B ring of theopederin D was constructed during the late stages of this synthesis using carbon-carbon bond activation via an Electron Transfer Initiated Cyclization (ETIC) method previously developed in the Floreancig research laboratories. This transformation proceeded under essentially neutral conditions and furnished the desired amidotrioxadecalin in high yield. The total synthesis of theopederin D was completed through coupling of pederic acid and an aminotrioxadecalin fragment using a modified diastereoselective strategy initially developed by Rawal. Our efforts toward the total synthesis of psymberin involved the synthesis of psymberic acid, as its absolute and relative stereochemistry was previously undefined. The use of readily available starting materials (D- or L-serine) and subsequent elaboration using syn or anti selective methallylation allowed for the efficient construction of all possible stereoisomers of psymberic acid. The absolute configuration of psymberic acid was determined through natural product and model system degradative studies, and analysis of the reaction products using a gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry apparatus (GC-MS) outfitted with a chiral |

Analytical and Approximate Methods in Transport Phenomena $137.1 On the job or in the field, when facing a problem with differential equations and boundary conditions, most likely you don’t have time to read through several publications in search of a method that may or may not solve your problem. Organized for quick and easy access to practical solutions, Analytical and Approximate Methods in Transport Phenomena is a reference for the day-to-day problems encountered when working with variables in heat, mass, or momentum transfer. This text is organized differently from usual resources on applied mathematics for engineers. First, it introduces a new classification system of the problem based on just three numbers, so locating the appropriate solution method is quick and easy. Second, the author presents mathematical methods with applications in mind, introducing examples, as well as common or possible solutions, before presenting any mathematical theory or method. This allows you to identify the issue you need to resolve, then apply the appropriate method to the problem at hand. The book also includes practical discussions of the consequences and applications of various solutions. The book highlights mathematical methods as tools for solving practical problems, not as a primary objective. Its structure and focus on application, with just the right amount of mathematical rigor, makes it the most effective manual available for easily finding the analytical methods needed to solve transport problems. |

Since 2002, Mac OS X has been included with all new Macintosh computer systems. It is the successor to Mac OS 9, the final release of the “classic” Mac OS, which had been Apple’s primary operating system since 1984. Mac OS X, whose “X” represents the Roman numeral for “10″ and is a prominent part of its brand identity, is a Unix-based graphical operating system, built on technologies developed at NeXT between the second half of the 1980s and Apple’s purchase of the company in late 1996. From its sixth release Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” and onwards, every release of Mac OS X gained UNIX 03 certification while running on Intel processors. The first version released was Mac OS X Server 1.0 in 1999, and a desktop-oriented version, Mac OS X v10.0 “Cheetah” followed on March 24, 2001. Releases of Mac OS X are named after big cats: for example, Mac OS X v10.6 is usually referred to by Apple and users as “Snow Leopard”. The server edition, Mac OS X Server, is architecturally identical to its desktop counterpart, and includes tools to facilitate management of workgroups of Mac OS X machines, and to provide access to network services. These tools include a mail transfer agent, a Samba server, an LDAP server, a domain name server, and others. It is pre-loaded on Apple’s Xserve server hardware, but can be run on almost all of Apple’s current selling computer models. Apple also produces specialized versions of Mac OS X for use on… More: |

Applications and fundamental characterization of open air and acoustic-driven ionization methods for mass spectrometry. $49.99 One of the most fundamental challenges in analytical mass spectrometry (MS) is the efficient conversion of neutral molecules into intact gas-phase ions. In this thesis, I investigate the capabilities of various new and established ionization techniques including (a) the Array of Micromachined UltraSonic Electrosprays (AMUSE), (b) Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) and (c) Electrospray Ionization (ESI) for bioanalytical and biomedical analysis purposes.;The AMUSE is a MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS)-based device that was created as an alternative, and more sensitive approach for ion generation in an array format. In the AMUSE, the processes of droplet formation and DC droplet charging are separated allowing ionization of liquid samples using low charging voltages and a wide variety of solvents. Our analytical characterization work with the AMUSE showed that ion generation with this device was indeed possible, and that incorporation of a Venturi device increased signal stability and sensitivity due to enhanced droplet desolvation and increased ion transfer efficiency. A detailed investigation to determine the optimal source parameters for ionization of aqueous solutions of model compounds including reserpine, leucine enkephalin and cytochrome C was carried out and it was found that ionization was possible even without the application of a DC charging potential. Subsequent experiments using the thermometer ion method to characterize the AMUSE from a more fundamental point of view, showed that AMUSE ions are lower in internal energy than ESI ions, opening interesting possibilities for the mass spectrometric study of labile species. Furthermore, it was found that it was possible to manipulate the internal energy of the ion population by varying the parameters that most strongly affect desolvation and focusing.;Our studies with DART were directed at investigating its analytical potential. DART was applied to the identification of active ingredients (AIs) in low |

Automatic Performance Prediction of Parallel Programs $182 Automatic Performance Prediction of Parallel Programs presents a unified approach to the problem of automatically estimating the performance of parallel computer programs. The author focuses primarily on distributed memory multiprocessor systems, although large portions of the analysis can be applied to shared memory architectures as well. The author introduces a novel and very practical approach for predicting some of the most important performance parameters of parallel programs, including work distribution, number of transfers, amount of data transferred, network contention, transfer time, computation time and number of cache misses. This approach is based on advanced compiler analysis that carefully examines loop iteration spaces, procedure calls, array subscript expressions, communication patterns, data distributions and optimizing code transformations at the program level; and the most important machine specific parameters including cache characteristics, communication network indices, and benchmark data for computational operations at the machine level. The material has been fully implemented as part of P3T, which is an integrated automatic performance estimator of the Vienna Fortran Compilation System (VFCS), a state-of-the-art parallelizing compiler for Fortran77, Vienna Fortran and a subset of High Performance Fortran (HPF) programs. A large number of experiments using realistic HPF and Vienna Fortran code examples demonstrate highly accurate performance estimates, and the ability of the described performance prediction approach to successfully guide both programmer and compiler in parallelizing and optimizing parallel programs. A graphical user interface is described and displayed that visualizes each program source line together with the corresponding parameter values. P3T uses color-coded performance visualization to immediately identify hot spots in the parallel program. Performance data can be filtered and |

Bacteria as actuators for hybrid (biotic/abiotic) swimming micro-robots: Design, modeling, and implementation. $49.99 The most significant obstacles to miniaturization of mobile robots down to micron scale are the miniaturization of on-hoard actuators and power sources required for mobility. To address these problems for swimming micro-robots, we propose interfacing live microorganisms (i.e. bacteria) with synthetic microfabricated robot body, with the ultimate goal of using bacteria for actuation, control, and sensing; and simple nutrients, such as glucose, for powering. By studying the hydrodynamics of bacterial flagellar motion, a design methodology for flagellar propulsion of swimming micro-robots is developed and key issues such as the effect of separation distance of neighboring flagella and the proximity of boundaries are experimentally studied. Propulsion of synthetic micro-spheres by bacteria is successfully demonstrated and critically analyzed. To achieve greater efficiency and motion directionality, a bullet-shaped polymeric body is microfabricated and a surfactant-based patterning technique is devised to limit the adhesion of bacteria to the flat end of the polymeric body. A chemical switching scheme is developed and successfully implemented to achieve repeatable on/off motion control of bacterial flagellar motors. Additionally, an on-board chemical release module is proposed and its feasibility is analyzed using a numerical mass-transfer model. Future applications of hybrid swimming micro-robots include early diagnosis and localized treatment of diseases. Potential target regions to use these robots include eyeball cavity, cerebrospinal fluid, and the urinary system. |

Biogeochemical cycling of arsenic in the marine shallow-water hydrothermal system of Tutum Bay, Ambitle Island, Papua New Guinea. $49.99 The marine shallow-water hydrothermal vent system of Tutum Bay, Ambitle Island, PNG discharges hot, acidic, arsenic-rich, chemically reduced fluid into cool, alkaline, oxygenated seawater. Gradients in temperature, pH, total arsenic (TAs) and arsenic species, among others, are established as the two aqueous phases mix.;Hydrous ferric oxides (HFO) are precipitated around focused venting, and coat the surrounding sediments visibly to 150 m away. HFO coatings, mechanical transport and weathering of volcanoclastic sediments, as well as dissolution of carbonate sediments nearer to venting, combine to alter sediment chemistry substantially.;Tutum Bay surface sediments have a mean As concentration of 527 mg/kg. Arsenic at concentrations up to 50 mg/kg (mean = 19.7 mg/kg) was extracted from the easily extractable fraction of surface sediments. Arsenic is elevated in surface seawaters (8 mug/L) directly over hydrothermal vents, and As(III) is substantially enriched in both surface and bottom seawater throughout Tutum Bay. Surprisingly, aqueous As(V) far exceeded aqueous As(III) at almost all distances and depths investigated for Tutum Bay pore waters. These data indicate that throughout Tutum Bay, chemical disequilibria among As species provides potential metabolic energy for arsenite oxidizing and arsenate reducing microorganisms, and that As is bioavailable from two major environments: (1) easily-exchangeable As from surface sediments, and (2) in surface seawaters, which may allow for biological uptake and trophic transfer through plankton.;The soft coral Clavularia sp., the calcareous algae Halimeda sp., and the tunicate Polycarpa sp. were collected and analyzed to assess bioaccumulation and biotransformation patterns. All organisms collected from the hydrothermal area displayed higher (2 to 20 times) TAs. Concentrations of arsenic species in their tissues were also elevated compared to the control site. Increased concentrations were observed near focused venting. |

Biological Process Engineering: An Analogical Approach to Fluid Flow, Heat Transfer, and Mass Transfer Applied to Biological Systems $188 A unique, accessible guide to the application of engineering methods to biological systems.Presenting for the first time a practical, design-oriented, interdisciplinary approach to transport phenomena involving biological systems, Biological Process Engineering emphasizes the common aspects of the three main transport processes-fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer. In clear and simple terms, it explores the relevance of these processes to broadly defined biological systems such as the growth of microbes in bioreactors, the leaching of pollutants into groundwater, and the chemistry of food manufacturing. Reaching well beyond standard applications in medicine and the environment to areas of biotechnology, aquaculture, agriculture, and food processing, this book promotes analogical thinking that will lead to creative solutions. While keeping the mathematics to a minimum, it explains principles of effective system modeling and demonstrates a wide variety of problem-solving techniques. Readers will find:* Systems diagrams comparing and contrasting different transport processes* Biological examples for all types of systems, including metabolic pathways, locomotion, reproduction, responses to thermal conditions, and more* Numerous design charts and procedures* An extensive collection of tables of parameter values, not found in any other text.An ideal undergraduate text for biological engineering students taking courses in transport processes, Biological Process Engineering is also an excellent reference for practicing engineers. It introduces the reader to diverse biological phenomena, serves as a stepping-stone to more theoretical topics, and provides important insights into the fast-growing arena of biological engineering. |

Biophysics: An Introduction $99 The message of this book is that biophysics is the science of physical principles underlying the “phenomenon life” on all levels of organization. Rather than teaching “physics for biologists” or “physical methods applied to biology”, it regards its subject as a defined discipline with its own network of ideas and approaches. The book starts by explaining molecular structures of biological systems, various kinds of atomic, molecular and ionic interactions, movements, energy transfer, self organization of supramolecular structures and dynamic properties of biological membranes. It then goes on to introduce the biological organism as a non-equilibrium system, before treating thermodynamic concepts of osmotic and electrolyte equilibria as well as currents and potential profiles. It continues with topics of environmental biophysics and such medical aspects as the influence of electromagnetic fields or radiation on living systems and the biophysics of hearing and noice protection. The book concludes with a discussion of system analyses, including models of neural processes as well as of ecological interactions, growth, differentiation and evolution. |
